abstract = "The aim of this study was to unveil the phenology of different
types of grasslands from the Pampa and Mata Atl{\^a}ntica biome
in the Southern Brazil in a temporal series of NDVI data using
wavelet transform. Relationship of the NDVI series with the
Southern Oscilation Index (SOI), a measure related to El Nino and
La Nina events, was also assessed. The grassland types were taken
from a map derived after floristic, soil, elevation and climate
data were combined, for Rio Grande do Sul State. NDVI MODIS data
from 2000 to 2012 were sampled for the 10 different grassland
types and these data were the input for a wavelet transform using
Dog as the wavelet mother. Results indicated, for the campos de
altitude a very clear year cycle, denoting the biomass increase
and decrease during spring/summer and autumn/winter, respectively.
For the remaining grassland types, the wavelet power graph showed
the importance of cycles ranging from 4 to 8 years, pointing to
the influence of El Nino and La Nina events on the vegetation
growth and phenology. The wavelet analysis allowed identifying
variations in the time series data analysed. The spectra of local
and global wavelet power showed where and when these variations
occurred. It could be observed changes in intra-sazonal patterns
for the time series of NDVI/MODIS, with increased values during El
Niño and decreased during La Niña events.",
